Axel Heitmueller has been appointed as the Prime Minister’s Expert Adviser on Health. As part of his new responsibilities, he will advise ministers and help drive forward the Government’s vision for health and social care.
Heitmueller takes up the position after nine years as Chief Executive of Imperial College Health Partners, a non-profit organisation which brings together NHS providers of healthcare services, integrated care systems and universities across North West London.
Heitmueller has held a range of senior roles in government. During the Covid-19 pandemic, he served as Director of Strategy and Innovation at NHS Test and Trace in the Department of Health and Social Care. He has also worked in the civil service as Deputy Director and Chief Analyst in No.10 (2008 – 2010) and was an Expert Adviser to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions (2009 – 2010).
From 2006 to 2008, he was a Senior Policy Adviser in the Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit under both Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. He also served as Executive Director of Strategy and Business Development at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (2010 – 2013).
